2017-2018 Executive Members


The 2017-2018 PARIM Executive, starting July 1st 2017, includes the following members:

Dr. Audrey Nguyen, President
Audrey is a PGY-2 in Psychiatry with interests in Addictions Medicine and Palliative Care. She is passionate about medical education and curriculum development, regulation, and medical humanities. She completed her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Calgary. During her time there, Audrey co-founded, The Longview, University of Calgary's first medical humanities journal. Since starting her residency at the University of Manitoba, she has been active in the Psychiatry Residents Association of Manitoba. Her current research project is an educational seminar to improve access to care for patients with substance use disorders. She hopes to implement this quality improvement project in the coming weeks. Outside of medicine, Audrey loves spending quality time with family and friends, relaxing through yoga, experimenting with recipes in the kitchen, and -- being a born and bred Albertan -- skiing the slopes during winter time.
Dr. Mellissa Ward, Vice-President
Mellissa is a PGY-3 General Surgery resident. Born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, she completed her medical degree at Dalhousie University before moving to Winnipeg for residency. In her spare time, she enjoys baking, traveling, and trying new restaurants.
Dr. Inderveer Mahal, Treasurer
Inderveer is a PGY-2 Family Medicine resident. She was born, raised, and has done all of her medical education in Winnipeg. She is excited to be a returning member of the PARIM Executive Council. She looks forward to supporting resident-focused initiatives, particularly in the area of resident wellness. In her spare time she enjoys staying up to date on global politics, running, cooking and spending time with her family.
Dr. Paul Szelemej, Secretary
Paul is a PGY4 Neurology Resident. He was born, raised, and did his education in Winnipeg; including B.Sc., B.Sc. (Med), and M.D. degrees. He has served on the Board for PARIM since July 2014, and is looking forward to joining PARIM in an increased capacity as Secretary on the Executive Council.
Dr. Leslie Anderson, Past President
Leslie is a PGY-5 in Anatomical Pathology. She completed a B.A. in Psychology, an M.Ed., and medical school at UBC before returning to her hometown of Winnipeg for residency. She is particularly interested in autopsy and death investigation and will be heading to San Diego for a forensic pathology fellowship in July of 2018. Leslie is passionate about educating the public about medicine in general and pathology in particular and enjoys findings ways to use the media to engage with people. Outside of medicine, Leslie enjoys visual arts, pop culture, the outdoors, and traveling around the world. She and her husband welcomed their first baby, a son named Phoenix, in August of 2016.
Jessica Burleson, Executive Director
Jessica has been the Executive Director of PARIM since January 2015. In her administrative experience, she managed a full-time post-secondary English program for International students for almost a decade. An experienced educator, she has taught at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, where she also earned her B.A. and M.Ed. Jessica is devoted to lifelong learning, has studied a number of foreign languages, and once upon a time, performed onstage in cabarets and Fringe productions. She is dedicated to the representation, protection, and promotion of PARIM and would like to invite residents to drop by the PARIM office at HSC to say hello to her.
