CPSM Council Election

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) has provided one Associate seat on its Council for one of either a Resident, a Physician Assistant, a Clinical Assistant, or a Medical Student. Although PARIM has advocated strongly and repeatedly for a Resident-specific seat, it has been denied to us.

Therefore, PARIM is working hard to ensure that a Resident will once again be elected to this position so that we have a voice at the table. We do not want to be represented at this important organization by someone who is not a Resident.

We have TWO Residents who are running for this position, and there are THREE non-Residents competing for it. PARIM needs you to vote in this election to ensure that we can secure this position for another year. Ballots will be sent electronically on the 14th of August and the election closes at noon on August 29th. Many Residents have told us that their ballots went to “junk” folders, so check yours to get the ballot and vote!

Here are your two Candidates for the position:

Dr. Shayne Reitmeier, PGY1, Family Medicine Rural
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for the opportunity to be considered for the 2017/2018 Associate Member CPSM Council seat. My interest in committee work started with United Way Winnipeg’s Grant Committee. I held this position for 7 years, and gained experience working collaboratively to assess funding applications while developing standards for the program.
At the University of Manitoba, I joined the Faculty of Health Sciences Advisory Committee on Diversity, which was established to act as the main discussion and advisory body of the College in relation to Diversity and Inclusion. In addition to this committee, I continue to provide representation on a national level through the Canadian Medical Learners for Sexual and Gender Diversity Executive Committee. With this initiative, medical learners across the country work to advocate for a standard of education relating to the unique care needs of sexual and gender minorities. Finally, I am pleased to join PARIM’s 2017/2018 Board of Directors as the elected Rural Family Medicine representative.
With the experiences gained from the aforementioned initiatives, if elected, I am confident that I would provide effective representation for all associate members, including residents, medical students and physician assistants. Thank you for considering me as a strong candidate for the 2017/2018 Associate Member CPSM Council Seat.

Dr. Kelvin Tran, PGY1, Internal Medicine
Hello fellow residents,
My name is Kelvin Tran. I am one of the Internal Medicine R1’s, and I have put my name forth for the Associate Member election with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Manitoba. I am running for this position because I believe that it is important for residents to have a set of eyes & ears, and a voice at the table of one of our governing organizations. While I may be a fresh face here, I am eager to learn & get involved, and I will do my utmost to be a receptive representative and a fierce voice for all residents.
