Executive Committee

The 2019-2020 PARIM Executive, starting July 1st 2019, includes the following members:

Esther Kim

Dr. Esther Kim, President

Dr. Esther Kim was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB. She completed both her Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. She transitioned residencies from Internal Medicine to Diagnostic Radiology, and believes both of these experiences will enable her to be an excellent clinician.

Esther values medical education and strongly believes that medical school and residency should be a welcoming and empowering educational experience. For this reason, she became involved with PARIM; to advocate and to be a voice for her fellow residents. She hopes to represent the members of PARIM to the best of her ability and make a positive impact to the resident community. Transparency and open communication are her top priorities.

Outside of medicine, Esther likes to volunteer and mentor in her Korean community. She enjoys spending quality time with her husband and also likes to travel. Her current bucket list countries include Greece, Peru and Singapore.

Esther would love to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact her at: president@parim.org

Chris Classen

Dr. Chris Classen, Vice-President

Chris is a PGY-4 Psychiatry Resident with an interest in General Adult Psychiatry. He was born and raised, and has done all of medical training in Winnipeg. Returning as Vice-President for the current academic year, this is the third year that Chris has been involved with PARIM. Working in Mental Health, Chris has a particular interest in resident wellness. Outside of Medicine, Chris has an interest in politics, travelling, spending time with family, as well as relaxing on the shores of Lake Manitoba. As Vice-President of PARIM, he strongly believes in representing all Residents.

He can be reached by email at cclassen@manitoba-physicians.ca

Lesley Merkel

Dr. Lesley Merkel, Treasurer

Lesley is a PGY 4 in Internal Medicine. She completed her undergraduate training in nursing on Vancouver Island. Her medical school took her away from Canada to the northeast of England, Grenada, and to the hipster streets of Brooklyn, before having the privilege to come to Manitoba for residency. In her spare time she likes getting together with friends, being active and playing basketball, football, and ultimate Frisbee. She looks forward to working with the PARIM Executive Council to continue to support resident activities.

Dr. Audrey Nguyen, Secretary

Audrey is a PGY-4 in Psychiatry with an interest in the interface of physical, mental, and social wellness, particularly in the domains of Addictions, Palliative Care, Geriatrics, and Forensics. She is passionate about medical education and curriculum development, regulation, and medical humanities. She completed her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Calgary. During her time there, Audrey co-founded The Longview, University of Calgary’s first medical humanities journal. Outside of medicine, Audrey loves spending quality time with family and friends, relaxing through yoga, experimenting with recipes in the kitchen, and — being a born and bred Albertan — skiing the slopes during winter time. As Secretary, Audrey hopes to contribute to streamlining Communications and working in collaboration with other members to create and implement new Outreach initiatives.

She has an ‘open door’ policy and can be reached at nguyen34@myumanitoba.ca

Dr. Mellissa Ward, Past-President

Mellissa is a PGY-4 General Surgery resident. Born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, she completed her medical degree at Dalhousie University before moving to Winnipeg for residency. Mellissa has been involved with PARIM through a number of roles and is excited to continue that involvement as Past-President. In addition to her clinical duties and role with PARIM, she is working toward a Master of Science in Health Sciences Education through McMaster University. Her thesis will focus on ultrasound simulation. Outside medicine she enjoys baking, traveling, reading and spending quality time with her husband.
