President-Elect 2025-26 Candidate

Dr. Anthony Wightman, Internal Medicine PGY 1

Hello, fellow Residents. My name is Anthony Wightman. I am an Internal Medicine PGY1, the past PARIM Rural Board Member delegate, and the current PARIM President. It is my privilege to request your support for the continuation of my role as PARIM President. I have the experience and vision necessary to support a thriving Resident community, advocate for Residents, and establish a positive working environment as our Contract is negotiated.

As prior PARIM Rural Board Member Delegate, I helped to chair the PARIM Resident Awards Committee, and to plan the first in-person Awards Gala since COVID. This year PARIM has held successful Halloween and Holiday events, many small-group activities, Resident Appreciation Week festivities like free headshots, and is planning an exciting Awards Gala this May. Residency is a long road, and these activities help to foster community and recognize your hard work. As President, I hope to continue this tradition, with more options and availability, so you can all connect and celebrate.

I have worked to be accessible over the past year, and to advocate for you. This has meant getting more Residents involved in PARIM committees, being easily reachable in Town Halls, and successfully addressing many Contract grievances. In the coming year, I plan to hold more Town Halls, advertise them earlier, and enable greater Resident participation in PARIM committees. I will advocate for Resident concerns about Contract violations, and hold programs accountable.

While working within the Resident community and advocating for you, I have heard your concerns. They are pay, duty hours, and time off. These concerns manifest in a toxic working environment that affects Resident physical and mental wellbeing, and compels many Residents to leave Manitoba after training. Outside of Contract, I plan to liaise with PGME, Shared Health and DoctorsManitoba to improve access to mental health supports and resources. Residents should know where to turn, and who to ask for help. Within Contract, I will continue to fight for a deal that reflects and rewards your daily service, the sacrifices you’ve made as Residents, and the positive difference you make every day.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Your work over the past year has been an inspiration, and it would be an honour to represent you as President in the year to come.
