Presidential Election 2023: Candidate Statement

Dr. Matthew Thiessen, PGY 3, Internal Medicine

Dear colleagues,

I have served on the PARIM board for the past two years as medicine group representative and member-at-large. In that time, I have been inspired by the leadership and activism of our executive as PARIM has negotiated a competitive contract, taken legal action on behalf of residents, secured the accountability and stability of our finances, supported residents through accreditation, and brought forward a new committee for equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization (EDID).
My own passion has always been improving the conditions of our work through wellness initiatives, social events, feedback, and most importantly policy change. I find joy in our community of residents, and I want to hear about your challenges and achievements. Many of you know me to be bold and forthright in speaking up for positive change; I will continue to be an unrelenting advocate for residents in the role of President. My goal is to lead a strong union protecting our residents from contract violations and ensuring we can use our benefits without discrimination. I want to continue empowering our EDID committee to raise our consciousnesses and institute cultural change. I have the experience to guide our board into the next year as we tackle the lingering changes to the resident experience post-pandemic, continue to reach for greater recognition of our work, and ultimately ensure residents have the support necessary to learn and care for our patients with excellence.
