The R. Samuel McLaughlin Research and Education Award


This award is provided with the objective of enhancing the scholarship of the Faculty of Medicine through the training of future clinical faculty members in the areas of research and medical education.


Residents who have successfully completed their CFPC/RCPSC-track residency training and are wishing financial support to fund further fellowship training in research or medical education useful to the University.

Candidates in their senior year(s) of residency training may be considered for this award should they be able to combine their current residency training with the terms of the award. Candidates will be required to have been post graduate trainees at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba in a CFPC/RCPSC-approved program.

The research or educational initiative will normally be conducted within Manitoba. Candidates who wish to have such training elsewhere are expected to provide the awards committee with a definitive plan to return to Manitoba upon completion of said training.

The award cannot be held concurrently with another external major salary award.

Award Amount:

The R. Samuel McLaughlin Fellowship has a value in the amount of $25,000.00 (Cdn.) per year and the Manitoba Medical Service Foundation (MMSF) will provide matching funds for this award. The combined funding of the award is $50,000 per year. The term of the award is for one (1) year, commencing on July 1st.

Candidate Selection:

An awards committee consisting of the Associate Dean, (PGME), Associate Dean (Research), a representative from the MMSF, and a resident representative will review all completed applications and select the appropriate candidate on a yearly basis. The award funding may be deferred if no appropriate applicant is selected.

Application Package:

The following will be required as part of the candidate’s application:

1) A current and complete curriculum vitae (c.v.);

2) A completed application form;

3) A declaration of all funding held by the applicant;

4) Letters of reference from 2 (two) mentors/supervisors familiar with your work and areas of proposed training;

5) A letter of support from the proposed supervisor;

6) A letter of support from the department head which will include a statement as to the priority this candidate would have in future faculty recruitment;

7) Evidence of research/teaching support from supervisor and/or program to fund the proposed year of training.
