Dr. Mahrukh Khan, PGY 1, FM Northern Remote
I’m excited to put my name forward as a Program Delegate because I genuinely care about a supportive, transparent, and inclusive environment for all of us. Residency is demanding, and it’s important that we feel heard, represented, and connected. I want to be a voice for our concerns, big or small, and ensure they’re brought forward with respect and clarity. Whether it’s navigating scheduling issues, work-life balance, or understanding our rights within the Collective Agreement, I will advocate actively and communicate consistently. I value collaboration and would work closely with fellow delegates, the PARIM Board, and our grouping members to strengthen that sense of community. I believe in showing up, listening first, and following through. If elected, I’ll be approachable, responsive, and committed to making sure everyone feels like they belong and their concerns matter—because they do.
Dr. Raoon Khan, PGY 1 (off cycle), FM Northern Thompson
Hello fellow colleagues and companions, my name is Raoon Khan, and I am a PGY 1 family medicine resident in the Northern Thompson stream. I am grateful for the opportunity to be considered for the role of program delegate for the Rural, Remote, and Bilingual grouping. This role strongly aligns with my devotion to advocate for my fellow residents and my commitment to improve the resident experience. Residency can be a demanding stage in a physician’s career. Being part of a rural stream can present with additional unique challenges which I have become attuned to over the past year. Through my experiences, I have learnt that these challenges can be overcome with a robust channel of supports, strong leadership and clear communication, all skills which I have refined during my first year as a resident. A key element is the two-way communication between PARIM and the Rural grouping, which I would be privileged to facilitate through regular feedback from my fellow residents and close collaboration with the student union. If given the opportunity, I would be honored to serve as a conduit to address difficulties and help establish proactive solutions to improve our journeys as residents. Thank-you for your consideration.
Dr. Jennifer Setlack, PGY 1, FM Parkland
My name is Jennifer Setlack, and I’m a first-year Family Medicine resident in the Parkland rural stream. I grew up in Ste. Anne, MB, and have a deep-rooted passion for rural health and community care.
Before entering medicine, I worked for 11 years as a paramedic in downtown Winnipeg. During that time, I completed a BSc in Biological Sciences, a BA Double Honours in Psychology and Sociology, and began a master’s in Sociology. I completed primary research projects as part of this education that focused on the mental health of emergency responders, the workplace violence they experience, and how the erosion of preventive and community-based services in Winnipeg has forced emergency services to fill critical gaps. I presented my findings to city council and senior leadership and worked with media to raise public awareness and advocate for my fellow paramedics, firefighters, and the communities we served.
I believe strongly in the role of physicians as advocates—not only for patients but for broader systemic change. I’ve dedicated myself to this work throughout my career, both in healthcare and through community leadership. As VP of Social Programming at Varsity View Community Centre throughout medical school, I created and delivered free programs for families, helping to strengthen local support systems.
I’m proud to be training in rural Manitoba and would be honoured to represent resident voices on the PARIM Board.
